We’re always happy to find a large collection of free educational books, and it looks like Springer has recently made available over 50,000 books covering STEM subjects.

The academic and research books are available as PDF downloads. You can search and filter the list by discipline and topics. Hope you have enough room on your hard drive!

Try the link below, which searches all books written in English, except the preview-only ones. There’s also a list of all the math books over at GitHub.

F the Internet

“Does “G”mail use more gigs than “E”mail?” A woman gives up on using the Internet because she can’t figure out how it works. Elizabeth Mcdonough’s skit pokes fun at the sexist computer science videos from the ’80s. Because sadly, the prejudice still exists today.

SQL Games

I have just created a GitHub repository called sql_games. It contains games implemented as stored procedures, that can run on MariaDB or (with some changes) on Percona Server or Oracle MySQL.
You play the games via the command-line client. You call a procedure to make your move, then a text or an ASCII image appears.
Of course the same call should produce a different effect, depending on the game’s current state. To remember the state I use both user variables and temporary tables.
Why did I do that? Mainly because it was funny. I can’t explain why. And I can’t tell that it is funny for anyone: perhaps, where I’ve found interesting challenges, someone else would find a cause a frustration. But yes, it has been funny for me.
Also, I did it because I could. This means that others can do it. Stored procedures are not a useless and nasty feature that users should ignore – they are useful tools. Yes, several times I’ve complained that they need important improvements. But I complain because I like them.
Currently, three games are implemented:
Anagram – The anagram game. See a randomly generated anagram and try to guess the word. You can choose a language, and a min/max word length.
Bulls And Cows – If you don’t know the game, take a look at the Wikipedia page.
Hangman –  Try to guess letters and see an ASCII hangman materializing slowly while you fail.
Each game will be installed in a different database. CALL help() in the proper database to see how to play.

The New X-Files Featurette Reveals New Monsters

The New X-Files Featurette Reveals New Monsters

As a teaser for the X-Files revival, which premieres January 24, Fox has put a 21-minute featurette online called “Re-Opened” which gives a primer on the original series for new viewers and a tantalizing look at the six new episodes for the old fans.

Not everything is new. For example, we knew that the first and last episodes of the revival are mythology episodes and the middle four are standalone episodes. Although we now know that the reason both episode one and six are called “My Struggle” is because the first one is about Mulder’s struggle and the last about Scully’s. We also hear that they play with the original mythology for the show and will explain how the Cigarette Smoking Man could appear in the revival after what looked like his demise at the end of the original run.

There’s a ton of new footage in this. Four people on fire, Mulder flung down a hallway, a teary Scully promising to be by Mulder’s side, a description of a horned beast attack, a lizard creature running away from the FBI… there’s a lot here.

Make a Bacon and Egg Bread Wreath for a Great Holiday (or Anytime) Breakfast

It’s bacon and eggs stuffed into buttery bread. It cooks in under 15 minutes. It’s shaped like a wreath and can feed eight people. What more can you ask for in a breakfast treat?

Crescent rolls are the MVP of this dish, which you can assemble the night before for a quick bake in the morning. (You do need to have scrambled eggs and cooked bacon before you toss this in the oven.) Perfect for post-holiday mornings when the kitchen is the last place you want to be but you do want a hot dish to serve your whole family. I’m going to stock up on crescent rolls for this and mini apple pie bites all year round.
